A fire extinguisher is a portable device used to suppress small fires or control them until the arrival of a firefighting crew. It contains an agent that is discharged onto the fire to extinguish it by removing one or more of the elements of the fire triangle, which includes heat, oxygen, and fuel.

There are different types of fire extinguishers, each designed to extinguish fires caused by specific materials. For example, Class A fire extinguishers are used to extinguish fires caused by ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, and cloth. Class B fire extinguishers are designed to extinguish fires caused by flammable liquids and gases such as gasoline, oil, and propane. Class C fire extinguishers are used for electrical fires, and Class D fire extinguishers are used for fires involving combustible metals.

It is important to know how to use a fire extinguisher properly to ensure safety in case of a fire emergency. The PASS method is a widely recognized technique for using a fire extinguisher. It stands for Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep the extinguisher from side to side.

Remember that fire extinguishers are not meant to be a substitute for calling the fire department. If the fire is too large or beyond your ability to control, evacuate the area immediately and call the fire department.
